ntil recently, a colorful kitchen hasn't been all that important -- in
fact, it has been the style to use neutral colors in kitchens. Neutral appliances, cabinets, and wall
coverings have been common. But now we tend to be more expressive and use the kitchen decor to reflect our
personalities. And rightfully so. The kitchen, after all, is where much of the activity takes place in our homes,
so we should be using it to our best advantage.
Here are nine great ways to give yourself a more colorful
kitchen:
1. Paint and wall coverings.
There are so many different choices in colors that you'll need to take some time in deciding which ones to use.
Choose carefully because the rest of your decor will use the paint color as a basis. You may want to consider
borders or wallpaper in lieu of paint as these are becoming more popular as well.
2. Style and color
of faucets. You are no longer stuck with chrome. Brass and brushed nickel are commonplace as are colors,
especially white, black, and red.
3. Appliance color.
Thankfully, you won't find avocado or harvest gold among them. White and black are still popular as are stainless,
copper, and some designer colors. Choose wisely, though, appliances tend to stay around for a long time.
4. Counter tops and cabinets.
There are many materials, styles and colors to choose from. When selecting your countertops you will also want to
consider the style and presentation for your sinks and cook top if applicable. You may also want to coordinate with
a back splash.
Kitchen cabinets can be replaced or
painted. The doors and drawer fronts can be replaced or decorated or just the cabinet knobs and drawer handles can
be replaced. These often come in colorful styles that can go a long way toward brightening things up.
5. Floor covering. Your choice
of floor covering can also make a difference. Light or dark hardwood, and a variety of tiles are available. Tiles
can also be used for countertops and back splashes.
If you're trying to get away without a great deal of expense and a minimum of
effort, there are some things that you can do that involve just a modest expense and very little time,
especially if your colors are already more or less neutral.
6.
Tablecloths and place mats. You can change the entire look and color scheme
of your kitchen by changing and contrasting or coordinating these two items.
7. Window treatments. You can
use different window coverings, hard or soft valances, new draperies can replace old tired blinds. A change in
style or color can work wonders.
8. Flowers and decorative
items. Use these to change or add splashes of color. Candles and decorative containers can
make a big difference, and don't forget about color changes or covers for countertop appliances and canisters. A
bowl of real or artificial fruit can add an appealing touch.
9. Tableware. Glassware
in interesting patterns or dishes with colorful chargers underneath can make a difference especially when
coordinated with table cloths and centerpieces. A change in flatware, especially with colorful handles, will
brighten things up and give a new kitchen feel.
Giving yourself a more colorful kitchen can be as simple or as
elaborate as you want it to be. Whether you have a good-sized budget or just a few dollars, make sure that you plan
carefully and your kitchen should turn out the way you always dreamed it would.
